- MEDIA RELEASE - SENATOR THE HON. ERIC ABETZ Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shadow Minister for Employment & Workplace Relations

Liberal Senator for Tasmania

26th June 2012

Labor/Green Hypocrisy on Union Accountability

―On the very day of Labor’s promised new era of accountability Labor and the Greens in the Senate voted against a motion which sought to do exactly that,‖ Senator Abetz said today.

Notice of Motion - Senator Abetz

Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Abetz): To move—That the Senate— (a) notes findings by Fair Work Australia that Mr Craig Thomson misused Health Services Union members’ funds for sexual services, personal travel and entertainment and to secure a seat in the Federal Parliament; and (b) condemns the misuse of union members’ funds as found by Fair Work Australia.

―This shows Labor and the Greens empty rhetoric and hypocrisy on union accountability,‖ Senator Abetz said.

―This was a very simple test which Labor and the Greens abjectly failed.‖

―The Motion only requested the Senate to note Fair Work Australia’s findings and to condemn the misuse of funds as found by Fair Work Australia.‖

―Labor and the Green’s refusal to support such a simple motion is proof positive that the amendments to the Registered Organisations Act are only intended as window dressing and not genuine.‖

―Despite the 181 findings against Mr Thomson and the HSU, Labor and the Greens could not bring themselves to condemn the misuse of union members’ funds,‖ Senator Abetz said.
