STATEMENT BY TFIE PRIME MINISTER, THE I-ION Y J KEATING, NIP

APPOINTMENT OF MICIIAEL LAVARCH AS ATTORNEY-GENERAL

The Governor-General has today appointed Mr Michael Lavarch to be Attorney-. General, following, Nlr Lavarch's election as Member for Dickson. The poll for the seat of Dickson was held on 17 April, later than the election in other seats because of the death of a candidate during the campaign period and the need to issue a new writ.

When my second Ministry was appointed on 24 March, I announced that Mr Lavarch was to become Attorney-General upon being elected. In the meantime, Mr Duncan Kerr. has served as Attorney-General. The Governor-General revoked Mr Kerr's appointment as Attorney-General today at the same time he appointed Mr Larvarch.

Mr Kerr remains Minister for Justice, a position which he has held since 24 March. Mr Lavarch will be a member of Cabinet and will have overall responsibility for the Attorney-General's portfolio.

I am very pleased to welcome Mr Lavarch to the Ministry, where he will be one of four new Cabinet members who have not previously held ministerial posts. I am confident that Mr Lavarch will make a major contribution to the work of the Government.
