The Hon Bernie Ripoll MP

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, the Hon Bernie Ripoll MP, today sought to correct details in the Australian Financial Review (AFR) article, “Wang’s Vision for an Asia Pacific Exchange”, by Patrick Durkin, published on Saturday, 23 June 2012.

The article falsely stated that Mr Ripoll had recently met with the Deputy Chairman and Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Exchange (APX), Mr George Wang at the Sydney offices of APX. This is completely untrue as the meeting was held in the Commonwealth Parliament Offices in Sydney.

The article also erroneously claimed that unnamed persons, though written in a manner to appear as if from Mr Ripoll or his staff, suggested to Mr Wang that he should remove photos in his office of himself with former Prime Ministers Howard and Rudd.

The fact is there are no photos of Mr Wang with any Prime Ministers in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices, where the meeting actually took place.

Further, the inference drawn about Mr Ripoll in relation to the photos, which is based on a falsehood, is also fabricated and misleading.

“The comments, as published, are completely untrue and attempt to give a false impression of the meeting,” Mr Ripoll said.

No attempt was made by Patrick Durkin or anyone from the AFR to check the facts or verify where the meeting took place.
