Royal: While you were selling petrol, the government was busy making a pitch for the votes of the cane growers in Queensland. It has announced a tariff pause there and I wondered, do you see that as a pitch for their votes.
'r
McLachlan: Absolutely. There are a couple of things to be said about that. First of all, the Government had a task force in place for months and months and they haven't released the report. That report was done no doubt with taxpayers ' money and I don't know why it is 80 secret. But no doubt they will release the final report. That hasn't been done yet but we will be having a look at those things. \Vehave got a group of people together to examine it in some detail, and we will come up with our own proposal before the election.
Royal: The National Party candidate for Kennedy was busy last night, claiming responsibility for the success as he saw it in sugar tariff policy on behalf of National Party senators there, himself, Bill O 'Chee and a couple of others. Do you see it as a success and if so does the Na tional Party deserve credit.
McLachlan: I don1t know what he said, I was travelling back from Roxby Downs.
Roy al: He said it was lobbying by the National Party people that has led to this tariff pause. D o you think that it is a success and if so, do you see the Queenslanders deserving credit.
McLachlan: We are not walking away from our obligations - that is for a negligible tariff by the year 2000. And as you wou ld have seen last night, John Hewson and Tim Fischer put out a press release in which that point was made but also the commitment to a broad ranging reform â‘ petrol excise, sales tax and so on and as well of course, we will have a special look at
this industry and we will be announcing our policy before the election. f..
Royal: Well the labor party for its part, hopes that this will place pressure on the Co alitio n especially through the Queensland Nationals .
McLachlan: W'hat I think that the Government has done is to have a different policy for each different industry. It has now got a different policy about the removal of protoction for the -sugar industry as it has for the car industry and as it has for the textile clothing and footwear industry whereas every other industry iI}.Australia that comes under the general tariff area or
the nil tariff area will have no protection at all. It is, as you said at the outset, a politic al move by the government.
'Royal: But will it put pressure on the Coalition there?
McLachlan: \Ve are not going to react instantly to what the government does. As I said before, we will consider this matter and at an appropriate time, we will release our own policy.
