NEWS RELEASE ROGER PRICE MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CHIFLEY PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY TO THE MINISTER FOR DEFENCE

11 February 1993

HEWSON`S TRANSPORT LINK A SLEIGHT OF . HAND

The Federal Member for Chifley, Mr Roger Price MP, today questioned the sincerity of Opposition Leader Dr John Hewson's announcement to spend $50 million on a public transport link to Badgerys Creek Airport.

"The provision of public transport has been an issue on which Dr Hewson seems to have done yet another back flip," said Mr Price.

"In the Fightback document he announced he would 'withdraw $72 million from the (Commonwealth's) Urban Public Transport Program'.

"Now he has decided to spend $50 million on a public transport link to Badgerys Creek. Which announcement should we believe, or maybe we should wait until next week when he is bound to change his mind again."

Mr Price said the back flip was just a poor attempt by Dr Hewson to buy votes in Sydney's West.

"How can ;Dr Hewson seriously believe we think he is committed to urban public transport, when he is hell bent on making it less affordable by charging a whopping 15% tax (GST) on bus and

train fares.

"His attitude to public transport is best illustrated by his past comments that the economy would benefit if every commuter on the Sydney and Melbourne rail systems were given a car and the rail systems closed down. Perhaps this could also be taken as an

example of his commitment to the environment and the reduction of car emissions!

"The construction of Badgerys Creek Airport is an important issue for Western Sydney and I will continue to push, as I have always pushed, for its full development," said Mr Price.

"But I won't do a Hewson by making promises I have no intention of keeping,."
