Sir Paul Hasluck

Sir Paul Hasluck was a great Australian.

His sad death yesterday marks the end of one of the most distinguished careers in Australian public and .political life.

As federal Liberal member for the seat of Curtin between 1949 and 1969, Sir Paul held numerous senior ministries under successive Liberal/Country governments, including Minister for External Affairs from 1964 to 1969.

His love of and expertise in international relations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, were the hallmarks of his political life.

Sir Paul's years as Governor-General of Australia between 1969 and 1974 continued the Hasluck tradition of excellence, style and pride, as did his latter years in which he devoted much of his time and energy to publishing a series of books and articles on political, social and international issues.

Sir Paul Hasluck's contribution to Australia and particularly to the Liberal Party was enormous.

He will be remembered as being a genuine intellectual and a politician of the first rank who had the utmost respect for Australia's institutions and traditions.

But equally Sir Paul Hasluck will be remembered as a genuinely humble and self-effacing man.

On the death of this great Australian, we should all pay tribute.

On behalf of the Federal Coalition, I extend my deepest sympathies to Sir Paul Hasluck's family.
