SENATOR COOK IS RUNNING MORE THAN ONE CAMPAIGN

Senator Cook covets the post of Director-General of the ILO.

That is apparent from the minute paper from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that found its way through my office fax machine the other day.

It also is apparent from the minute that Senator Cook's coy response to the suggestion that he was actively campaigning for the post - that he was being prevailed upon by others to offer his talents - is dishonesty masquerading as modesty.

I understand that Senator Cook did actively lobby for the post of Director-General on his recent swing through the United States and Japan.

And I am led to believe that the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Senator Gareth Evans, has expressed amazement at the suggestion that his department was involved in Senator Cook's lobbying efforts.

Another porker. It simply is inconceivable that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Tradewould have become involved without both Senator Cook's and Senator Evans' consent.

In any case, the minute is directed to Mr Miles Kupa, the. Senior Adviser in Senator Evans' office.

The minute paper begs the question: is Senator Cook tired of his ministerial responsibilities or is he simply preparing a golden parachute for himself in anticipation of Labor's inevitable defeat on March 13?
