CALLING ON THE VETERAN COMMUNITY TO SHOW SOME ARTISTIC FLAIR

With one month until entries close, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, today encouraged the Victorian veteran community to tap into their creative side and take part in the 50th annual Story Writing and Art Competition.

Meeting with past years’ winners at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in Victoria today, Minister Snowdon said the competition provided a great avenue for veterans and their families to share their artistic talents with the community.

"For the past 50 years, this competition has showcased the originality and incredible talent of local veterans,” he said.

“Aside from the creative opportunities, this competition enhances the wellbeing of the veteran community through involvement in fulfilling, meaningful and enjoyable activities, such as story writing, art, craft and photography.”

Creative pursuits also give our veterans a chance to learn new skills, meet new people and to share their stories and history with a wider audience.

This year’s competition features a special writing category, ‘Recollections and Reflections of the Veteran Community 1962-2012’, encouraging entrants to reflect on their lives over the past 50 years.

“Each year, I’m amazed by the wide range of works that are submitted by the veteran community, and I expect the same this year. As we mark the competition’s 50th year, I strongly encourage Victorian veterans, their wives, war widows and their children and grandchildren over the age of 18, from amateurs to accomplished artists, to participate in this competition,” Mr Snowdon said.

All entries will be displayed in a public exhibition at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in October 2012. All winning entries will be included in a special annual publication called BRAVO! Recollections and Reflections of the Veteran Community.

Cash prizes, certificates and other awards for the best entries in each category will be presented at a special ceremony in November 2012.

Entries close on 31 July 2012 and entry forms and more information is available from:
