media release

Thursday, 21 June 2012 Climate Change Authority Board to recommend how much and how fast we cut pollution The announcement of the Board of the Climate Change Authority today brings Australia another step closer to cutting the pollution that drives global warming in line with what the science tells us is needed, the Australian Greens said today. "The key job of the Authority is to recommend the short and long term carbon budgets which will set how much and how fast we cut the pollution that drives global warming," Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne said. “It is essential that Australia contribute its fair share to the global effort to tackle dangerous climate change. "The establishment of the independent statutory Authority, based on the model of an independent expert body in the UK that has driven bipartisan ambition in that country, is a key achievement of the Greens in negotiations for the Clean Energy Act. “The Authority will depoliticise the fraught process of setting emission reduction targets and is critical to the transition to a low carbon future. "In the UK, the similar body recommended halving pollution in the next 15 years, and the conservative party agreed with Labor to accept the recommendation and make those targets law. “Just as the Reserve Bank has high standing in providing expert advice, so too the Climate Change Authority will guide government decision-making. "With the Rio conference currently looking disappointing, this step by Australia in putting the science front and centre of determining our fair share of the global effort to tackle global warming could help inject hope back into the hearts of all those who want to see a cleaner, healthier, safer Australia."
