The Hon Bernie Ripoll MP

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, the Hon Bernie Ripoll MP, today called on Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to explain why he is trying to shift the blame for his rates rise gouge onto the carbon price.

“The Lord Mayor can’t hide from hitting up ratepayers year after year by just blaming it on the carbon price,” Mr Ripoll said.

“The real reason the LNP Brisbane City Council is desperate to hike up council rates is because they have wasted tens of millions of dollars on white elephant tunnels and projects that have commercially failed leaving ratepayers footing the bill.”

“It is utterly deceptive for the Lord Mayor to pretend his average 4.5 percent increase in rates is because the carbon price is expected to have a 0.7 percent effect on the consumer price index (CPI)”

“CPI is a measure of inflation across goods and services purchased by households - not a measure of the carbon price on councils. The real cost to BCC is much less and reflects their need to make better decisions on waste management and more efficient use of their resources. This would actually reduce council costs and help ratepayers.

“Rate payers also need to ask why the Lord Mayor is proposing to waste a further $1.3 million on carbon price administration and reporting, when the Brisbane City Council is already reporting under the National Greenhouse Energy and Reporting System.

“While there may be a need for a small rate rise for some councils to address their management of carbon pollution, the Federal Government is directly helping ratepayers by delivering an average $10.10 per week per household in assistance. But this should not be a green light for the BCC to gouge ratepayers year after year.

“The Government is not going to stand by and watch a greedy and incompetent council administration gouge its ratepayers while trying to shift the blame onto the carbon price.”
