TAXING LOCAL SPORTS CLUBS WON'T HELP SYDNEY'S WEST

Taxing the Mount Druitt Town Rangers Soccer Club won't help 'create jobs in Sydney's west, said Federal Member for Chifley,

Roger Price.

"And taxing the little athletics, swimming, cricket and rugby

league clubs of St Marys, Mt Druitt and Blacktown won't help

either," said Mr Price.

The Liberals plan to apply the goods and services tax (GST) to

non-profit organisations, such as sporLlug chubs U Ld wuiniklUliity

groups.

"That means the voluntary treasurers of local groups would have

to keep detailed records of all the GST they paid on supplies and

put GST on top of the price of everything sold, including

memberships.

"So on the weekend, instead of taking part in sport, they will be

stuck at their desks wading through GST paperwork."

The club treasurer would have to lodge regular GST returns to

the Australian T .x Office - claiming a rebate on the GST paid on

supplies and paying the GST charged on sales.

Community groups with a turnover less than $50,000 would not

have to worry about this paperwork if they nominated themselves

,as GST exempt.

However, while being exempt would mean charging no GST on

sales, it would also mean having to pay 16% GST on supplies and

services - so the cost of running the group would go up regardless.

"Because the cost of running the group would go up, officials

would have to either increase fees for members, or cut the group's

activities," said Mr Price.

"Instead of burdening clubs with mountains of GST paperwork or
