"I am pleased that all this work has been reflected in the lifting of

my primary vote.

"At the start of this campaign I said the election was about jobs,

economic recovery, and fairness - about keeping the Australian

value of a 'fair go' alive.

"The ALP put forward a compassionate blueprint for the way

ahead, building on our country's strengths - it fair health system,

a strong education system and peaceful workplaces.

"The people. of Chifley agreed that it was vital to keep these

important institutions alive, rejecting the desperate attempts by

the Liberals' to smash then.

"It is extremely encouraging to see that the voters in the rest of

Australia., like those in Chifley, reject the destructive agenda of

the Liberals," said Mr Price.

"Quite clearly, the people of Chifley recognised that a GST would

have been disastrous for them, and that their best chance for

economic growth lay with the Labor Party.

"The last few years have been turbulent and local people have

made • their fair share of sacrifices in the national interest. And

this is starting to pay off; the achievements of record exports, low

inflation, and workplace harmony.

Mr Price said the Chifley election campaign had, by and large,

been a clean one and without personal, rancour, and he wished all

the best to the five unsuccessful candidates.

"Special thanks must go . to my wife Robyn and my family, as well

as my many supporters who worked so tirelessly. to ensure any re-election," said Mr Price.

"And, once again, I thank the people of Chifley for giving me the

opportunity of representing there. I look forward to being their

voice in Canberra for the next three years."
