NEW YEAR ANGER

Local Member of Parliament and Berowra Candidate Philip Ruddock has been confronted by anger and alarm from constituents frightened at the prospect of continuing high levels of unemployment.

The National Australia Bank this week forecast continued unemployment at more than 12% for the rest of this year.

Philip Ruddock said: "Paul Keating's gift to Australia will be the first ever one million unemployed Australians."

"My office, which did not close during the festive season, continued to receive angry calls from residents appalled at the Government's double standards, the two primary examples being the payment of $65,000 to the Speaker by his own Department as a result of his bicycle fall. The second, the lavish Attorney General's Department's barbecue and gazebo."

"These lamentable double standards have created an environment of anger, hostility and despair."

"Contrasted with the increasing youth unemployment, the government's generosity to its own is the worst possible New Year gift to struggling Australians."
