CHRISTMAS ISLAND CASINO LICENCE SIGNED

Warren Snowdon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories, today granted a licence to Christmas Island Resort Pty Ltd to operate a casino on Christmas Island.

Expressing his delight at the issue of the licence, Mr Snowdon said, `This is the culmination of a long term strategy for the development of Christmas Island. All involved should be congratulated on their wide vision that has produced such a suooessful result.'

In 1985 expressions of interest in developments on Christmas Island were canvassed Internationally , by the Government, Perth businessman Frank Woodmore'3 proposal of a casino/resort was accepted. After consulting the Christmas Island community through a referendum, the Government gave approval

In June 1986 and signed an agreement with Mr Woodmore's Christmas Island Resort Pty Ltd a year later, The company is backed by significant Indonesian and Singaporean Investment

Extensive investigation of both Individuals and companies Involved in the venture has been undertaken by the Australian Federal Police and the Christmas Island Casino Surveillance Authority.

Mr Snowdon said, 'This Is a first -class resort casino complex which will bring employment, investment and a diversified economy to the people of Christmas' Island. We have provided a focus for long term development of tourism on this beautiful and unique island, which is ideally placed to expand our close business

relations with the Asian region.

'I have full confidence that those on the Island will respond to the opportunities that this magnificent resort will provide.'

The $60 million resort comprises a world class casino facility and 156 well appointed residential chalets. A certificate of occupancy for all the buildings was also issued today.

As the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Australia's external Territories, Warren Snowdon concluded, 'This is a milestone in the history of one of Australia's Indian Ocean Territories, I congratulate, Everybody Involved with this venture.'
