LABOR FUNDS 'CHILD CARE FOR MILLIONAIRES' WITH CASH FROM MIGRANT CHILD CARE PROGRAMS

Information received by the Coalition suggests that child care funding for the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) has been slashed by Labor, with NSW being subject to a 25% or half a million dollar cut this year - the second massive reduction in the last two years.

Labor's substantial cuts to funding for child care places for migrant families, when at the same time it intends to extend child care assistance to millionaires, smacks of hypocrisy and social injustice.

Non-English speaking newly arrived migrants are dependent upon AMEP for child care assistance while they attend English Language classes. Yet Labor has decided that these people, most in need of child care, are to be forced out of the program.

According to the Kindergarten Union Children's Services which runs child care for AMEP in NSW, the enormous reduction in funding has meant that it has been forced to cut service provision by 21% - which means around 200 child care places have been slashed from a total of 800. Administrative and advisory staff have also been cut back.

Migrant women are the big losers with many being forced to drop out of the program to look after their children, which has meant their English language studies will suffer and their successful integration into Australian society will be curtailed. All this so Mr Keating can fund his 'child care for millionaires' promise.

Clearly, in Mr Keating's 'child care for millionaires' policy there is no place for migrant women.
