Cash bonus for local families from today

More than 13,250 local families will start benefiting from the Gillard Government’s new Schoolkids Bonus from today.

Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, said local families receiving their Family Tax Benefit Part A payment fortnightly would automatically receive $409 for each child in primary school and $818 for each child in high school over the next few weeks.

“I know it can be pretty hard for parents to keep up when you’re trying to put kids through school,” Nick Champion said.

“This extra money is to help parents pay for school expenses such as books, stationery, uniforms and school excursions, and it should give our local families a bit of extra relief.”

The payment is the full amount of the Education Tax Refund for 2011-12, before the Schoolkids Bonus starts being paid in two upfront instalments in 2013.

From next year, eligible families will automatically receive the new bonus in their bank accounts before Terms One and Three to help them pay for school expenses.

The Schoolkids Bonus will be worth $410 a year for each child in primary school and $820 a year for each child in high school.

Nick Champion said many local families weren’t receiving their full entitlement under the old system.

“I know a lot of local parents just couldn’t afford to pay for all of the school items first and then wait months until tax time to get something back.

“Keeping on top of all the receipts was also a big hassle. The new Schoolkids Bonus means parents will have some extra cash in their pockets before those costs start piling up.

“Getting kids through school is hard enough, and we wanted to make it a bit easier for local parents.

“It’s not everything, but it’s another step in the right direction.”
