Dr Bob Woods Shadow Minister for Health UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL 5.00 pm AEST WESTERN AUSTRALIAN HEALTH COALITION HEALTH POLICY

A VICTORY FOR COMMON SENSE.

Dr Bob Woods, Shadow Minister for Health, today welcomed the Western Australian Coalition Health Policy, saying it was a sensible approach to the Medicare crisis brought on by the Federal Labor Government and compounded by inept management by the Lawrence WA. Labor Government.

It fits in well with the Federal Coalition reforms and together they will return the health care system to the excellent standards which Western Australians deserve to have.

Dr Woods said he was appalled at the true number of people waiting for treatment as exposed by the W.A. Coalition studies. If these figures hold true for the rest of Australia, the true number of patients waiting for treatment is closer to 200,000 - an appalling situation and one of which the Labor Government should be thoroughly

ashamed.

Dr Woods said he shared with the W.A. Coalition a commitment to reducing duplication in bureaucracy and introducing long needed efficiency into the delivery of health services. He also looked forward to a spirit of close cooperation between Federal and State Governments, in marked contrast to the confrontationalist attitude taken with the majority of States by the current Health Minister, Brian Howe.

Dr Woods also said that the extra billion dollars which would flow into the hospital system as a result of the Federal Coalition policies will enable worthwhile reforms to be made to the decaying public hospital system in all States including W.A.

Together the Federal and Western Australian Coalition approaches will be able to vastly reduce waiting lists not only in W.A. but all around Australia. He congratulated Kevin Minson, the next Minister for Health in W.A. on a sensible document which will improve the standard of health care in that State.
