Media Release The Hon David Hawker MP Speaker of the House of Representatives Federal Member for Wannon

8 March 2006

Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today congratulated Port Fairy’s Bamstone on receiving the AusIndustry Manufacturing Award at the 2006 Powercor Great South Coast Regional Business Awards.

Celebrating its 30th year, Bamstone is a leader and major supplier in the manufacturing of Dimensional Stone products throughout Australia and is well recognised throughout the world. Employing over 50 employees, Bamstone produces over 50,000 square metres of paving products and 15,000 lineal metres of kerb and channel per year, creating some of the world’s finest footpaths, pedestrian streetscapes and building facades.

Conferred by the Great South Coast Economic Development Group, the awards recognise the achievements of local businesses from a variety of sectors.

Mr Hawker presented the AusIndustry Manufacturing Award at a dinner at Southcombe Park Stadium last night.

The Australian Government, through its business unit, AusIndustry in the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, was proud to be a supporting sponsor of the awards.

“The businesses and projects acknowledged at last night’s awards highlight Australia as a nation of innovators and achievers,” Mr Hawker said.

“The importance of innovation, commercialisation and competitive practice cannot be overstated. They help to generate jobs, exports and higher living standards.

“The Australian Government has shown it is committed to supporting our innovative companies with the new Commercial Ready program, which will provide greater access to innovation grants and is expected to help about 1,700 small and medium businesses develop new products and processes between now and 2011.

“We would like to see more businesses take advantage of these support measures which have been put in place to make all our businesses more competitive.”

Mr Hawker said the local and national economies were greatly enriched by the commitment and success of this year’s winners, and congratulated the Great South Coast Economic Development Group for providing a means through which to recognise high achievers.
