The Hon Julie Bishop MP

Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs

Deputy Leader of the Opposition

The Coalition congratulates Democratic Party of Japan leader Yukio Hatoyama and his party on their historic

election victory, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop said today.

Ms Bishop said the Coalition looked forward to working with the Prime Minister-elect and the new government to

build on the existing strong relationship between Australia and Japan.

“I also pay tribute to the Liberal Democratic Party, with which Australia maintained close and constructive

relations over many decades,” she said.

“The economic relationship between our countries greatly strengthened over the last five decades since the

signing in 1957 of the Japan-Australia Commerce Agreement.

“Japan has been Australia’s largest export market for nearly 40 years and is the country with which we have our

largest trade surplus.

“Our nations share values of freedom and democracy and we are both committed to maintaining stability and

prosperity throughout our region.”
