BUDGET FUNDING TO SAVE OLD MILL FROM DISREPAIR The Hon Martin Ferguson MP, Minister for Tourism, has announced Budget funding of $75,000 for capital works to complete much-needed maintenance to the South Perth Old Mill.

Minister Ferguson said: "This funding will help restore an icon of South Perth which was left to fall into disrepair under the Howard Government.

“This funding will provide the Library and Heritage Department of the South Perth City Council with the required funds to repair the sails and front entrance, upgrade signage, and refurbish the building externally.

“As the stone building is preserved as a National Trust property these works must be completed according to heritage standards.

“South Perth’s Old Mill, built in 1835, is the oldest industrial site in Western Australia and despite a conservation report in 1997 outlining the need to comprehensively repair the site it has fallen into a poor state.

“The local community has repeated sought funding to secure and restore the site to operational capacity however the Howard Government refused to come to the party.

“The mill was the first of its kind to operate during the 1800s and it is the oldest surviving link with the pioneering days of the colony of WA.

“It has suffered from over a decade of neglect and at times demolition has seemed inevitable.

"South Perth City Council has ensured that it will not reach that stage, yet they have been struggling to maintain it without this desperately needed injection of funding.”
