Shadow Minister for Defence

19 August 2008

Australian Special Forces are to be commended for their successful attack on Mullah Akhtar Mohammed, the Shadow Minister for Defence, Senator Nick Minchin said today.

"With IEDs and suicide bombers being such a major threat in Afghanistan, the killing of Mullah Akhtar Mohammed makes Oruzgan a safer place for both Australian troops and the civilian population," Senator Minchin said.

"And it is a strong message to the Taliban that Australian Special Forces are able to locate and kill their senior leaders on the Taliban's home turf.

"While details of this operation are necessarily limited, our troops are to be congratulated on this successful operation in remote country in broad daylight. It speaks volumes for the skills and professionalism of our Special Forces that they were able to successfully conduct this operation and return unscathed.

"This is a timely reminder of the contribution that Australian forces can make in Afghanistan by taking the fight up to the extremist Taliban, while working with the democratically elected Afghan Government to bring longer term peace to the region through strengthening Afghanistan's institutions and infrastructure" Senator Minchin
