$391,000 FUNDING FOR TRAINING IN NT

Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion today announced that Waikan Employment and Training Services will receive funding of $391,050.00 for a new Vocational Education and Training Centre for Katherine has been approved and work will commence in January 2005.

The Facility, which will include areas for Hospitality, Retail, Business, Tourism and Engineering as well as a new administration office, will be based at the Katherine Training Centre, Second Street, Katherine.

The funding has been provided by the Australian Government through the VET Infrastructure for Indigenous Peoples Program.

The funding will be used to redevelop an existing building in the Katherine Training Centre that has not been used since 1998. The key features of the new facility will be an operational Commercial Training

Kitchen with Retail and Bar areas, and an Engineering and Welding section.

Waikan Employment and Training Services is an Indigenous owned Registered Training Organisation that provides training services in a wide range of qualifications to indigenous and non indigenous people in Katherine and surrounding communities. Waikan Employment and Training Services is the only private RTO based in Katherine.

The new facility will cater for VET in School students, School Based New Apprentices, New Apprentices, Prevocational students, Indigenous community members and town based indigenous and non indigenous students.

Work will commence in January 2005 and all works should be completed by June 2005.
