Please explain: does SBS plan to slash newsroom staff?

The Australian Greens are calling on SBS management to explain whether it is planning to

slash newsroom staff at a time when the Special Broadcaster is expanding and increasing its

revenue base from advertising and marketing activities.

"There are rumours that the 6.30 TV News bulletin is going to cut back to half an hour, and

editors may be losing their jobs once digitisation is introduced," said Greens communications

spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam.

"Now we've become aware of an email to staff from News Director Paul Cutler, to say the

network is going to cut staff numbers in News and Current Affairs.

"Like all media outlets, SBS is fully entitled to make internal decisions about how it wants to

organise its resources and priorities. Our main concern is what these proposed cuts will

mean for the standard of news and current affairs at our Special Broadcaster.

"SBS management could ease staff fears by clearly outlining its plan, including the number

of jobs it's looking to cut and what those positions will be," Senator Ludlam said.
