Australians going to Gulf receive immediate veterans' benefits

All Australian Defence Force personnel who leave Australia for service in the Gulf will qualify immediately for veterans’ entitlements and repatriation benefits, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Bruce Scott said today.

As veterans, they will be entitled to all repatriation benefits, except the service pension, under the Veterans ’ Entitlements Act 1986 ( VEA). Benefits include disability pension payments should they become injured or sick as a result o f their service, health treatment for any such injuries or illnesses, and concessional home loans.

Compensation under the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 will also be available.

If actual conflict breaks out veterans will also become entitled to a service pension.

“Australians should be assured that the members of the Australian Defence Force who are deployed to the Gulf will receive their full entitlements as veterans,” the Minister said.
