FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 06 JUNE 2008

RUDD’S SOCIAL INCLUSION IS A SHAM!

The Rudd Labor Government’s social inclusion agenda has already been exposed as a sham, according to Senator Sue Boyce, Liberal Senator for Queensland.

“At Senate Estimates last night, officers from the Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), agreed that education inclusion should be treated as a subset of social inclusion.

“DEEWR administers out-of-school hours (OSH) programs for all mainstream students, but they won’t be running a new OSH program for students with a disability.

“The out-of-school hours program for 12-18 year old students with a disability will be administered by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).

“This will mean a whole new area of exclusion for students with a disability. Instead of programs being provided in the same place run by the same service providers, students with a disability will be excluded from current mainstream services with a separate OSH program,” Senator Boyce said.

“Apart from the discrimination and exclusion, parents will have the extra hassle of dropping and collecting their child with a disability from one OSH program and their other children from another.”

“If the Government can’t demonstrate that their social inclusion agenda is actually inclusive at this very basic level, it’s a sham!”
