SHADOW MINISTER FOR WORKPLACE RELATIONS

21 November 2003

ANDREWS ADDS INSULT TO INJURY

Suggestions by the Minister for Workplace Relations, Kevin Andrews, that industrial relations laws need changing because a union official was the subject of a criminal assault are outrageous.

I was very sad to hear of the attack on Mr Cameron, National Secretary of the AMWU.

But I am appalled that Mr Andrews is seeking to use this unfortunate incident as a pretext for his harsh new anti-union laws.

Labor joins the ACTU and Mr Cameron in condemning all forms of violence in workplaces and in unions. But violent crime must continue to be addressed through the criminal justice system, not through industrial relations laws.

Mr Andrews seems unaware that assault is already a criminal offence.

This Minister will stop at nothing in seeking to justify vicious new anti-union laws.

When workers are injured or killed in industrial accidents, I don’t see Mr Andrews calling for tough, new workplace health and safety laws. Typical Liberal double standards.
