Rudd Government commits to new partnership with local councils

Dr Mike Kelly the Federal Member for Eden-Monaro has today welcomed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s announcement that the Federal Government will pursue even closer ties with local councils.

Dr Kelly said this election commitment will enable a better working relationship will councils and mayors and will ultimately lead to a better provision of service especially to rural and regional communities.

All Australian mayors and shire presidents will be invited to attend the first annual meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government at Parliament House on November 28. This initiative will give local communities a real voice in the future of Australia’s national infrastructure.

Dr Mike Kelly, Member for Eden-Monaro said: “In the 10 months since I was elected I have been working closely with local councils in my electorate to get the best possible deal for local communities.

“Already I have been able to secure $6.35 million for local roads and over $28 million for local government financial assistance grants in Eden-Monaro, but a new partnership will help us deliver more.

“A new partnership and understanding will enable me to work even more closely with the newly elected councils and mayors throughout the nine shires in my electorate.

“I am committed to a new cooperative engagement with the level of government that is closest to local communities.

“The Rudd Government wants to work as partners with all local councils to get good outcomes on roads and infrastructure that help support and build our communities.

“I have talked a lot about this policy with our community and there was a universal desire to see it occur. I am delighted to see our government delivering on an election promise that will mean a great deal to rural and regional Australia.

This was an election commitment I am very happy to see fulfilled. It will do a lot for rural and regional areas that have suffered badly through the neglect of the last 12 years.

“Local councils have long been treated like the poor cousin of Government, but the announcement of the setting up of the Australian Council for Local Governments will give each council and shire a direct voice to the cabinet table.

“I will be writing to all the newly elected mayors and councillors across the electorate congratulating them on their election and encouraging them to take up this important invitation”, said Dr Kelly.
