EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM

ABORIGINAL LAND RIGHTS (NORTHERN TERRITORY)
AMENDMENT BILL 2002
OUTLINE
The Bill makes provision for the following amendment to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 :
ยท the Bill would add 5 new parcels of land to Schedule 1 of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 as the result of two separate agreements reached between the Northern Territory Government, the relevant traditional owners and Land Councils. This would bring the total number of parcels of land which have been scheduled under that Act since 1977 to 69.
FINANCIAL IMPACT STATEMENT
Financial impact of the amendment is expected to be nil.
NOTES ON CLAUSES
Clause 1 - Short title
This clause provides that the Act may be cited as the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Amendment Act 2002 .
Clause 2 - Commencement
This clause provides that the Act will commence on the day on which it receives the Royal Assent.
Clause 3 - Establishes Schedule of Amendments as follows:
Item 1. Item 1 would add one parcel of land described as Harry Creek East to the existing Part 4 of Schedule 1 of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 .
