Brief Digest of Bill

Purpose

- To provide for the collection of the levy to be imposed by the proposed Apple and Pear Levy Act.

Provisions

To facilitate collection of the levy, this Bill provides for quantity purchasers (selling agents, processors etc.) to be responsible for the payment of the levy on fruit they handle but empowers them to recover the levy from the growers. (clause 6)

The Bill also provides for maintenance of a list of quantity purchasers (clause 4), due dates for payment (clause 5), penalties for non-payment (clause 7) and offences (clause 9), access of collectors to inspect records (clause 10), etc.

Other matters relating to the collection of the levy may be prescribed by regulations. (clause 13)
