Senator GREENWOOD (VICTORIA) -Will the AttorneyGeneral confirm that expenditure by the Commonwealth of moneys to purchase either the buildings or the plant of the Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia Limited in Sydney for the purposes of public housing or car production is not authorised by this Parliament or by the Constitution? Will he therefore put into proper perspective claims by Mr Hawke, President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions and President of the Australian Labor Party, that the Commonwealth Government cannot constitutionally do what he says it ought to do?

Senator MURPHY - I am not prepared to agree with the honourable senator, irrespective of whatever the merits might be of such an acquisition, for the simple reason that I am not satisfied that his assertions about the Constitution in particular are correct.
