Senator MURPHY -Senator Wright in the adjournment debate on Tuesday night referred to a question he asked on 1 August concerning the means by which the petroleum products subsidy scheme has been terminated. The honourable senator will be aware that the scheme began in 1965 following the enactment of the States Grants (Petroleum Products) Act 1965. Section 4 of the Act provides that the Minister for Customs and Excise may, by writing under his hand, formulate a scheme for the purposes of the Act and may amend the scheme so formulated. The scheme has been amended to the effect that it does not apply to sales of petroleum products made after 31 July 1974.
