Senator Greenwood (VICTORIA) asked the Minister representing the Prime Minister, upon notice:

(   1) What was the number of Second Division officers of the Public Service on 2 December 1 972.

(2)   What was the number of Second Division officers of the Public Service on 31 August 1973.

(3)   In what Departments has there been an increase in Second Division Public Service numbers.

(4)   In respect to each such Department what was the number of Second Division officers on 2 December 1972 and what increase occurred.


Senator Murphy - The Prime Minister has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1)   The Public Service Board has advised-There were 907 Second Division officers of the Australian Public Service on 2 December 1972.

(2)   There were 996 Second Division officers of the Australian Public Service on 3 1 August 1 973 .

(3)   and (4) There were major changes in the Australian Public Service on 19 December 1972 when a number of departments were abolished and a number of new departments created. This should be borne in mind when comparing figures for dates either side of 1 9 December 1 972.

The following tables list the number of Second Division officers, by department: at 2 December 1972; at 20 December 1972, when the changes in departments had been made; at 31 August 1973; and the increases by departments over the period 20 December 1 972 to 3 1 August 1 973.
