Senator Greenwood asked the Minister representing the Minister for Science, upon notice:

(1)   Does the Minister recall stating on 29 July 1973 on the television program 'This Week' that 26 monitoring stations were put on alert to monitor French nuclear test fall-out as from Wednesday 26 July.

(2)   Were these stations 'on alert' to monitor Chinese tests; if not, why not.

(3)   If they were, when did they cease being 'on alert'.

(4)   What were the results of the monitoring.

Senator Murphy - The Minister for Science has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   No. The 26 station monitoring network referred to employs the sticky paper ion exchange fallout sampler (SPIEFS) method. A different system employing air filter sampling equipment was in use prior to 25 July.
