Senator WRIGHT O n 20th September 1972, Senator Donald Cameron asked me the following question without notice:

Will be direct inquiries to tbe Department of Labour and National Service to ascertain why the Department does not provide statistics on the age and duration of registration of all persons registered with the Commonwealth Employment Service.

The Minister for Labour and National Service has now provided me with the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Statistics of unemployed persons registered with the Commonwealth Employment Service dissected in detail by age and duration of registration are collected from time to time by the Department of Labour and National Service and the most recently published findings were set out in the Departmental publication 'An Analysis of Full Employment in Australia' (Labour Market Studies No. 2) 1970. The findings of more recent years are currently being processed.

The collection of these detailed statistics more regularly than at present would add considerably to the workload in the District Employment Offices whose principal function is to assist employers to secure their labour requirements and persons seeking to work to obtain employment. The extraction of statistical information is already imposing an onerous workload on the Employment Service and it would be hard to justify a further increase.

It should be noted that the Department does publish each month a dissection of the number of unemployed persons registered with the Commonwealth Employment Service under two broad age categories—adult s and juniors, i.e. under 21 years. The Bureau of Census and Statistics also publishes regularly each quarter, in its survey of The Labour Force, a dissection of the unemployed according to age and duration of unemployment.
