Senator WHEELDON (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - My question, addressed to the Attorney-General, arises from reports that certain people in Australia have received letter bombs which apparently were posted in Malaysia. Has the Commonwealth Government made any approaches, or does it intend to make any approaches, to the Government of Malaysia for the purpose of some mutual action being taken to attempt to prevent a repetition of these incidents?

Senator GREENWOOD - I am not sure of the details of the sources from which the letter bombs have come. Some publicity has been given to this matter which essentially is one for police investigation and reaction to police advice on whether steps can be taken overseas which might reduce the risk of innocent people receiving these bombs in Australia. I will take up the matter with the Commissioner of the Commonwealth Police Force and, necessarily, will consult with the PostmasterGeneral to see whether what the honourable senator suggests is practicable.
