Senator DOUGLAS McCLELLAND (NEW SOUTH WALES) — I direct a question to the Minister representing the Minister for the Army. Following my speech on the motion for the adjournment of the Senate

The PRESIDENT Thi s morning or last night?

Senator DOUGLAS McCLELLAND (NEW SOUTH WALES) In the early hours of the morning. Will the Minister request the Minister for the Army to ascertain how many members of the Australian Army Provost Corps are employed in a private capacity as members of the Metropolitan Security Services Pty Ltd or otherwise as guards in a civilian capacity? Will the Minister agree that this sort of work cuts across the general edict of the routine orders relating to the ability of servicemen to obtain part time civilian work which in no way is related to their Army duties? Will the Minister also attempt to ascertain whether outside the 'Daily Telegraph' office in Sydney on the evening of Thursday, 18th May, was more than one Army provost employee as a counter to a union picket line?

Senator DRAKE-BROCKMAN (Western Australia) (Minister for Air) Las t night in answering the submission made by the honourable senator on the adjournment I described the conditions upon which a member of the armed Services may obtain approval to do work outside duty hours. I do not want to traverse that again. I shall certainly seek information on the number of army personnel who are employed by the particular firm about which the honourable senator has asked. In his remarks last night he said that 5 or 6 big burly men were on duty and that one was recognised as being an Army man. The Minister for the Army accepts that statement. I will convey to the Minister the question that the honourable senator has asked and I will obtain as much information as the Minister is able to provide.
