Senator O'BYRNE (TASMANIA) On 23rd May 1 asked the Minister representing the Minister for Trade and Industry, Senator Cotton, a question relating to overseas firms cornering the Australian market in consmetics and toiletries. I asked him whether the Department of Trade and Industry had details of this overseas control of the industry. The Minister said that if the Department of Trade and Industry wished to help the select committee looking into foreign ownership it could do so. In view of the fact that I have found that the Department of Trade and Industry has figures which show a 76 per cent control of our beauty aids, toiletries and cosmetics by overseas organisations, I ask the Minister whether he will supply the Senate with the names of the overseas companies which control 76 per cent of the cosmetics and toiletries market of Australia?

Senator COTTON (New South WalesMinister for Civil Aviation) I shall be happy to ask the Department of Trade and Industry to supply me with figures for the Senate as the honourable senator requests or, equally, to supply the figures to the Senate committee engaged in this work. If the committee wants to make a request through me to the Department of Trade and Industry for information bearing on this matter I shall certainly facilitate the request.
