Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister representing the Postmaster-General, upon notice:

(1)   Has any instruction been given to the engineering staff of the Redfern Mail Exchange that they are not to disclose to officials of the Amalgamated Postal Workers' Union any noise decibel readings taken at the Redfern Mail Exchange?

(2)   Have any noise decibel readings been taken in recent times whilst the machine has been in operation; if so what were the readings?


Senator GREENWOOD The PostmasterGeneral has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   The most recent comprehensive readings were taken in October 1969. The readings ranged between 73 dbA and 85 dbA, and are well within the accepted hearing conservation limits recommended by the Commonwealth Acoustic Laboratories.
