Senator PALTRIDGE - The following answer has been provided by the Minister for National Development -

1.   The available details about the direct overseas holdings in the principal tin producing and smelting companies are set out below. There may, of course, be some portfolio holdings by overseas persons but their size is not known.

 

2 (a). The most recent comprehensive figures for tin production by individual operators relate to the calendar year 1963.

 

The tin industry is currently engaged in a major expansion of its production, in particular -

(a)   the Aberfoyle group of companies at Greenbushes, Western Australia; Mr Cleveland, Tasmania; and Ardlethan, New South Wales.

(b)   Renison Associated Tin Mines N.L. at Renison Bell, Tasmania.

(c)   Mineral Concentrates, a subsidiary of Kathleen Investments (Aust.) Ltd., at Moolyella, Western Australia; and

(d)   Tableland Tin Dredging N.L. at Mr Garnet, Queensland. 2 (b). Almost all of Australia's production of tin concentrates is smelted by Sydney Smelters Pty. Ltd. and O.T. Lempriere and Co. Ltd.
