Senator McCLELLAND (through Senator O'Byrne) asked the Minister representing the Minister for Health, upon notice -

1.   Mas the Minister seen a recent statement, attributed to one of his colleagues, that the Australian pharmaceutical industry is controlled by overseas interests to the extent of 97 per cent. of its total capital holding?

2.   Would not the use of generic terms by medical practitioners in writing prescriptions under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme rather than the use of trade names mean a considerable saving to the Scheme and to the public generally?

3.   Will the Minister investigate whether drug companies are each contributing £2,500 annually towards a fighting fund to enable them to retain prescription by trade name rather than by generic terms?

4.   If this is found to be so after investigation, will the Minister order a complete inquiry into the drug industry in Australia?
