Senator HANNAFORD (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - I direct a question to the Minister representing the Minister for Health. Is it not a fact that it is the policy of the Commonwealth Department of Health to insist that members of the medical profession use generic terms in the writing of prescriptions, at least, for the pharmaceutical benefits scheme? Does the Minister know that certain members of the pharmaceutical profession claim that the practice opens the way for so-called backyard producers of drugs, and that in the public interest the use of recognised trade names for drugs would ensure the dispensing of better quality drugs?
