Senator HENTY - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follows -

1.   Five companies tendered on a multiple basis for car rental rights at Commonwealth airports. These respective offers covered -

(a)   forty-seven airports at various rentals ranging from £5,000 per annum for Melbourne to £10 per annum for Armidale;

(b)   four airports at various rentals ranging from £4,392 per annum for Melbourne to £682 per annum for Adelaide;

(c)   four airports at various rentals ranging from £505 per annum for Launceston to £104 per annum for Wynyard;

(d)   twenty-three airports at various rentals ranging from £1,050 per annum for Melbourne to £50 per annum for Port Lincoln;

(e)   two airports in Papua-New Guinea at rentals of £50 per annum for Port Moresby and £50 per annum for Lae.

2.   Two companies tendered on an exclusive basis. The successful tenderer offered £25,000 for the right to provide the service at 47 airports. The other offer was less and covered only four airports.

3.   The Department accepted the bid by Avis Rent-a-Car System Pty. Ltd. for exclusive rights as it provided the best financial return to the Commonwealth together with the advantages of a car rental service at the greatest number of airports for the convenience of the travelling public.
