Senator McKENNA (Tasmania) (Leader of the Opposition) . - Mr. Deputy President, I second the motion on behalf of the Australian Labour Party in the Senate. The motion arises from the tragically sudden death on Sunday last of the Princess Royal, Her Royal Highness Princess Mary, the daughter of the late King George V, sister of the late King George VI, and aunt of the present Queen, Queen Elizabeth the Second. The late Princess had the great consolation of having with her at the end one of her sons and his three children. Although she never visited us in Australia, the Princess Royal was well known and respected here for her dignity, her gentleness, her kindness and her keen interest and activity in social welfare.

On behalf of the Opposition I extend to her two sons and their families, to the Queen, to the Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of Windsor - the two brothers of the Princess - and to all other members of the Royal Family deepest sympathy in the loss they have sustained by the passing of the Princess Royal. We extend special sympathy to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester who, at the moment, are removed from the domestic scene and are committed to a tour of duty in Australia.
