Senator ANDERSON - The Minister for Customs and Excise has furnished the following answers to the honorable senator's questions - 1. (a) The Freedom to Read Association has proposed -

(i)   that a new definition of obscenity be adopted to replace all existing codes;

(ii)   that the interpretation of such definition should rest on a judicial type authority similar to that recently introduced in New Zealand; and

(iii)   that such tribunals should deal with both locally produced and imported literature.

(b)   Other persons and organisations have made proposals simitar to those offered by the Freedom to Read Association.

2.   No decisions have been made by the Government in respect of these specific proposals but the general question of uniformity in literature censorship is still receiving consideration.
