Senator FITZGERALD (NEW SOUTH WALES) - I address this question to the Leader of the Government in the Senate: In view of the large increases in salaries and allowances that were granted to both members of Parliament and top public servants and which helped considerably to increase the cost of living and inflation in this country, why is the Government taking the unexpected and almost unprecedented step of opposing just claims by workers before the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission for an increase of the basic wage to meet the increased cost of goods over the past six months?
