Senator PALTRIDGE - The reports to which the honorable senator has referred have been brought to my notice. Naturally, these comments afford considerable satisfaction to the Government and I believe, more importantly, to the people of Australia. The recognition that the security of our homeland rests upon defence in depth is of great satisfaction to us. We have no doubt that the Australian people - and for that matter, the people of the Western world - realise that the defence of Australia can be successfully carried out only if we continue to adopt in concert with our allies a forward posture and maintain that depth in defence which is so important.
