Senator PALTRIDGE - The Prime Minister has provided the following answers to the honorable senator's questions -

1.   Sections 34 and 82 of the Public Service Act 1922-1964 require that permanent appointees and temporary employees in the Commonwealth Public Service take an oath or affirmation of allegiance to the Queen.

2.   The oath or affirmation docs not in terms require or include any renunciation of foreign nationality. I do not, however, express any view on the effect, under the relevant foreign law, of the taking of any such oath or the making of any such affirmation upon the foreign nationality of the person accepting employment with the Commonwealth.
