Senator HENTY - I have been informed by my colleague, the Treasurer, that some consideration has already been given to this request and he has agreed to receive a deputation from the Taxpayers' Association on the matter tomorrow morning. The right honorable gentleman informs me that there are, however, important reasons why the Bill should be passed as soon as practicable. The Government acknowledges that the Bill is technical in character but it should not be difficult of comprehension by persons such as members of the Taxpayers' Association who have a specialised knowledge in this field. It is undesirable that a long period of uncertainty should persist before adoption of the legislation by the Parliament. The Treasurer further advises that the Government is willing to give consideration to views and suggestions relating to the legislation which may reach it over the period of the Parliamentary recess, and if it can be demonstrated that some amendment is necessary or desirable it will take appropriate action in this direction in the autumn session.
