Senator HENTY - The Minister for

Trade and Industry has supplied the following answers -

1.   Australian wheat acreages over the past few years have been as follows: 1960- 61 .. .. 13.4 million acres 1961- 62 .. .. 14.7 million acres 1962- 63 .. .. 16.5 million acres 1963- 64 . . . . 16.4 million acres

2.   Australia's exports of wheat to India since 1960-61 have been as follows: 1960- 61 .. .. 4.9 million bushels 1961- 62 .. .. 21.2 million bushels 1962- 63 .. .. 7.1 million bushels 1963- 64 . . . . 7.6 million bushels

3.   Average values of wheat sold to India over the past three years have been higher than for sales to China. In two years the average difference has been about £2 per ton and in the third year about £1 per ton. Wheat prices generally fluctuate throughout the year and average values of sales to different countries could vary considerably according to the times and quantities of each sale. India has been buying late in the season' when prices have been high. A further reason for the difference is that China has purchased a considerable quantity of off-grade wheat which sells for less than the f.a.q. wheat bought by India.
