Senator Sir WALTER COOPER - My question, which is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Shipping and Transport, relates to a matter of road safety. Has the Minister seen a report concerning an automatic headlight dimming device which, it is stated, has been developed by one of Japan's leading electrical appliance manufacturers and will automatically dim the headlights of two cars coming from opposite directions, thus minimising the risk of collision? lt is understood that this device is so small that it can be installed in any type of car. In view of the mounting number of tragic road accidents in Australia, resulting in many of our citizens being cither killed or maimed for life, will the Minister inform the Senate whether such a device as that mentioned has been investigated by the Australian Road Safety Council, with the object of reducing the number of traffic accidents at night caused by the glare of headlights?
